Chapter 1: Moving

"Maria, sweetie, do you have to sing to every song that comes on the radio?"

Young Maria pouted and crossed her arms in front of her chest. She stuck her tongue out at her older sister who stated the comment.

"Yes, I do, Brittany!" She shouted at her older sister.

Brittany laughed and looked back at the road. They were in the car, driving to their new home in Rodeo, California.

It was the year 1977. It was in May and it was a hot, cloudless day.

Maria Jay Williams was a 5 year-old from London, England. Maria had long, wavy blonde hair with beautiful blue eyes. She had a cute button nose and a gorgeous smile. She was a very stubborn young girl, she always had to get her way. She was always hyper, always in a good mood.

And yet, she was different than all the other 5 year-olds. She came from a rotten family.

Maria was driving to Rodeo with her 21 year-old sister, Brittany. Their parents were the worst parents in the world. They had no job, they always had welfare. They never had enough money to give their two girls anything they wanted or even needed. The kids were on child support but when Brittany turned 18, she moved out. She graduated and planned to go to college in England. But then when she realized she had left Maria with her filthy parents, she decided she had to get them two away from Maria and herself as soon as possible.

So for 3 and a half years, Brittany worked her ass off, being a waitress, cooking for a diner, babysitting: doing any job that would pay her. She finally got enough money to fly out of England and get to the states.

She planned on moving to California. She wanted a nice small town though, nothing like Hollywood or LA. That's not a good environment for a 5 year old. Brittany was looking through the ads of houses for sale in California and she came upon a nice small town called Rodeo. She found the perfect house and that's where they were going to live.

It was 3 AM and they were driving through Oakland, CA. Maria was sleeping, laying down on the car floor with a pillow and her favorite blanket she called 'Blue' because of its beautiful baby blue color, which was her favorite color.

Brittany looked back at her younger sister and smiled. She was happy Maria wasn't near her parents anymore.

Their father had beaten Brittany when she was 10 and to when she was at least 15 and she didn't wan the same awful thing to happen to Maria.

It was 10:45 AM when Maria woke up. She opened her eyes slowly as she glared into the rays of the sun. She yawned and looked over at the driver seat.

Brittany wasn't there.

"Brittany!!!!" Maria screamed in fright "BRITTANY!!!" She screamed louder.

Brittany ran over from outside. "I'm so sorry Maria Jay, I'm right here! I'm glad your awake, come see the new house!" She said sweetly.

Maria grinned in delight. Brittany opened the door for her and she stepped out.

The house was the most beautiful house Maria had ever seen. She stared at it as if it were a magical castle, and her Prince Charming was up above to see her.

Now the house wasn't really that pleasant. It was white and had some cracked shudders. One window was cracked but the rest weren't. There was a cute blue door in the middle with a small window. Some of the paint was coming off and it had a huge tree in the front yard.

It looked so magical to Maria Jay because the home she used to live in was dirty and disgusting. Plus, the door on this house was baby blue just like her favorite blanket.

Brittany laughed at Maria's enlightenment and took her hand as she helped her across the street to the house.

Brittany released the grip on Maria's arm as she introduced a man who was helping them unpack. "Maria, this is Andy Armstrong. Hes our new neighbor and hes helping us unpack. Andy, this is my 5 year old sister, Maria."

Maria grinned at Andy. He was the tallest and handsomest man she had ever seen. "Hi!" She said gladly to Andy and Andy laughed with joy. "Hi Maria!" Andy replied.

Andy's wife, Ollie, walked over with a smile. "Oh!" Brittany said with a laugh. "This is Ollie, Andy's wife. This is my younger sister, Maria."

Maria smiled and said 'hi' and Ollie did the same to Maria. "Maria, I think you'll like it here in Rodeo. I have 6 kids: David, Holly, Marcy, Anna and Billie Joe. Billie Joe is your age, and I think you two will get along very well"

Andy nodded in agreement "Very well" he said with a laugh. Maria grinned. "Does he like to play tag??" She asked. Ollie nodded "Very much so" Maria gleamed with pride. "Can I play it with him?" She asked politely. Andy chuckled. "Of course, hes outside in our backyard right now" Andy said, pointing to the Armstrongs backyard.

Maria smiled as she ran to their backyard. She opened up the Armstrong gate and shut it tight. She went down a bit, their was a small hill. She looked to her left and saw a huge deck. She walked over to it and saw a small boy. He had brown hair with a bit of curls. She guessed that was Billie Joe and ran over to the deck and ran up the steps. She smiled at the boy as she walked up to him. "Hi, I'm Maria Jay" She said as she sat down in the chair next to the boy. The boy smiled back at her. "I'm Billie Joe" he replied. She smiled. "I'm your new neighbor" She stated. Billie nodded. "That's cool" he said.

Maria Jay looked down at a piece of paper Billie Joe had on his lap. "Whats that?" she asked. Billie looked down at it. "Oh, this is one of my songs....I'm writing a song about that tree..." he said. Maria gasped in thrill. "That's so cool! Writing songs is so cool!" Billie laughed. "I thought you were gonna say that the tree is so cool" Maria laughed so hard she started coughing. Billie laughed at her. Maria laughed again.

After she stopped laughing she looked back at Billie. She got a good view of him. He was kind of tan with beautiful green eyes.

She smiled at him and looked down at his paper. "So what do you have so far?" she asked, curiously.

Billie looked at the paper "Not a lot" he said. He read it out loud:

"This is tree has leafs
This tree is green
This tree has a brown trunk
This tree is big"

Maria smiled. "That's really cool!" She said with a smile. Billie smiled. "Thanks Maria!" He said.

"Your dad told me you like to play tag......do you?" Billie Joe laughed. "Yeah....and I bet I could beat you" he challenged. Maria snorted "Well, we'll just see about that..........YOUR IT!"

She tapped him in the chest and ran down the steps as Billie ran after her. The whole rest of the day, they played tag in the Armstrongs backyard. They had so much fun, they lost track on who won.

Chapter 2: The Whole Bit

"Ok, what did you get for number 9??" Billie asked as he looked up at Maria Jay.

Maria sighed. "I have no idea, this math homework is stupid" She said as she turned the pages of her math book furiously.

Billie chuckled at her.

It was October 1982, a month after Billie Joe's father, Andy, died of cancer. Billie was still in the healing process of the depression and Maria was still Billie Joe's best friend so she was always there to help him. The day he died, Billie called her and Maria cried with Billie for hours. She spent the night with him and didn't leave his side for weeks. She still didn't, she knew he was still in pain.

Today, in October, they were laying on Billie Joe's floor in his bedroom on their stomachs, doing math homework. Billie closed the math book. "Fuck it, I don't get it" he said. Maria slammed her book in a agreement. "I sorta get it, I just don't want to do it" she said. Billie laughed and nodded.

"Billie Joe, Mikes here!" Ollie, Billies mother, called. Mike ran up the stairs and within 2 seconds, he grabbed a pillow off of Billies bed and sat down next to Billie and lied on his stomach, with the pillow.

Maria chuckled at Mikes enthusiasm. Billie looked at Mike. "Well hello" he said. Mike laughed. "Hey" he replied to Billie and Maria.

The nodded as in to say 'hello'. They were silent for a while until Mike broke some news. "I finally got a guitar." Billie smiled. "FINALLY!" Billie said. "You rock, Mikey" he added. Maria laughed as she drank some of her bottled water.

Mike chuckled and stole the water bottle from Maria and took a sip. Maria smiled and snatched it back from him. Billie laughed. It was just another ordinary day with his 2 best friends.


It was that night and Maria Jay was spending the night at Billies. The 2 shared Billies bed, not caring at all if they slept together, they didn't like eachother like that. They were best friends, it didn't matter.

As they lied there around 11 PM, Maria started thinking about her life; her future.

"Billie?" she whispered to see if he was still awake. "Yea?" he replied. "What do you want to be when you grow up?" she asked quietly. "I want to be a musician. In a band, play my guitar, maybe sing too. Write songs and play for fans....what about you?"

Maria Jay put her head down and thought. "I don't really know" she said honestly. "I've never thought about it till now" she whispered. Billie nodded in understanding. "Well, what do you like to do?" Billie asked with a yawn.

Maria took the question into consideration. She didn't reply for a few minutes until she said "I think I want to do what you said. I wanna be a singer for a rock band." Billie smiled. "Well, when you get your band, My band will tour with yours" he whispered. Maria giggled. "Of course" she replied. Billie smiled and looked at the ceiling.

He yawned again and Maria's eyes started to droop. She yawned and heard Billies breath get slower and longer. He fell asleep and Maria Jay looked up at the ceiling. Why was she so worried about her future at the age of 10, she thought. She wanted to know what she would be doing for a career, who she would marry, how many kids she would have: the whole bit.

Would her and Billies relationship change? She couldn't imagine not being friends with Billie, they were going to be friends forever.

But would the really??

Maria looked over at Billie. He was sleeping peacefully. He looked like he was concentrating, he was probably dreaming. Maria smiled at him.

She never thought about ever dating Billie. She didn't know if she would even want to. Billie was kind, nice and cute but did she like him in that sence??

Billie was perfect in her mind. He had imperfections but those fit into Maria's perfections and they all balanced out. The two were so similar yet so different.

Maria knew she loved Billie, she loved Billie more than anyone......but in what way?

Maria yawned again. She decided that there were too many questions involved and she was too tired. She looked over at Billies digital clock. 11:47 PM. She might as well go to sleep. She leaned over to Billie, putting her head on his shoulder. She lied for a while listening to him breath and his slow heartbeat.

At that moment, she realized she was falling in love with him.

Chapter 3: Teen Years


"You know, you really need to lay off her, she did nothing to you"

"Well, a skanks a skank, 2 dollar. Shes a piece of trash!"

Billie was just about ready to punch the guy across the face. Maria grabbed his arm to stop him. They walked away together as the last bell of the day rang.

Billie Joe and Maria Jay walked home together just like they did every school day since they were 7. They were now 17 and still best friends.

Billie Joe's dream was coming true. He had his band, Green Day. He had it with Mike and Tre Cool. Billie was the singer, songwriter and guitarist, just like he said he wanted to be to Maria, 7 years ago. They had one CD out called 39 Smooth and they were working on another called Kerplunk!

But Billie Joe wasn't all perfect. He was a drug addict. He was hooked on cocaine, weed, heroin, meth and many more drugs. He was a 'pill popper' and a heavy drinker. It seemed like he was always stoned but it was just his way of escaping life.

Maria Jay's dream was not coming true. She had said to Billie 7 years ago she wanted to be a singer in a rock band. The only problem was she had no band.

She had no band because her only friends were Billie and Mike.

She was also a drug addict. She did everything Billie did. She popped the pills and drank heavily.

Her job wasn't good either. She worked as a hooker at a local strip club in Berkeley. She was a prostitute as well. She was always stoned and she seemed to get more stoned or more drunk than Billie.

Her and Billie were also what people labeled 'emo'. They were depressed a lot and cut their wrists.

As they were walking home, they always got stars from strangers or points from people at school. Billie had it better than Maria because he had a few more friends than her.

When Billie and Maria were 14, they dated. They dated till they were almost 16 but they realized they just couldn't do it anymore.

When the went out, they never kissed or anything. They were both too shy to do that, even in front of eachother. And there was never a good time for them to try it. Their lives were just too fucked up for a relationship.

As they walked they didn't speak. They walked hand-in-hand even though they weren't dating. They both loved eachother, and it was in both ways, friendship and relationship.

When people gave Maria dirty looks or if someone was whispering or pointing as they were walking, Billie squeezed Maria's hand a bit. He hated her feeling hurt and he knew when they did that, she felt awful inside.

They got home and went straight up to Billies room. No one was home so they got some pot out and started smoking it.

They sat against the bed. They stopped smoking and sat there for hours.

"Maria, you know that your not a skank....your not a piece of trash" Billie was slurring his words a bit form being stoned but Maria knew he was thinking clearly about this.

Maria smiled and looked at Billie "Thanks Billie" she replied. Billie smiled at her and they went back to being silent.

The two of them were in love but their love couldn't live this way

Could they even live this way?

OMG!  I love it!  Poor Maria and Billie...I hope they end up okay.
